Horace Hayden helped establish and received the first dental license awarded in the world in 1810. He went on to teach the first known lectures on dentistry in the United States in a university setting at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1819, and co-founded the world's first dental college, the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1840.
